Teeth whitening: the end of the shops in Belgium

The bleaching of teeth is in vogue. Kits all in one proposed in supermarkets, brands of toothpaste compete with superlatives to praise the qualities of their respective products, abrasive powders boast their radical efficiency, while laboratories with a storefront market in pharmaceuticals, strips ready. Sniffing also the right move, shops - sometimes part of beauty centers - have flourished here and there, offering to great fanfare, to whiten teeth in a jiffy. A situation unacceptable to the Society of Dentistry (MDS), which decided to put an end to such practices as illegal. A recent court decision gives reason. The case pitted the GDS to the White Naturally trading company, established avenue Louise, Brussels. The SMB has brought an action for termination of activity before the Commercial Court, arguing that the institution violated the law, notably by promoting - through flyers, Internet, brochures ... - Its dental whitening treatments. However, the law prohibits advertising for medical procedures.

The judge agreed with the direction of the Society of Dentistry, stressing fundamental: money is the sole responsibility of dentists who practice elsewhere for quite some years. "This ruling - which we welcome with great satisfaction - will certainly case law, Hugh comes Grégoir spokesman and former chairman of the SLD. "It was important that a court finally clarified the situation. Anyone can actually open a store and legally sell whitening products, provided that they meet a set of constraints, especially in oncentration active substance. But from the moment treatment is applied in the mouth, it falls under the medical act. And that whatever the technique used. " Between the time of the hearing and that of the trial, White Naturally the company was declared bankrupt. "This changes nothing on the bottom," says Hugh Gregory. "And it is obvious that if we learn that others are engaged in this business without complying with legal requirements, it goes without saying that we will go back to trial." And it seems that one or the other "boutique" is in the eye ...
The bleaching technique is gaining in popularity, although its popularity is growing "slowly," says Hugh GrĂ©goir, spokesman for the Society of Dentistry. Price plays a role in the reluctance of patients. "Getting a fork is not easy," says Hugh Gregory. "The rates vary widely from one dentist to another, and the treatment itself. Say it is expensive, and it starts easily around 250 to 300 €.

With what result? The average thinning revolves around one to two shades - the classification of the color of teeth - which is not huge. "It depends on the patient. In all cases, cooling is evident, but the tooth is in its basic hue, yellow, orange, gray, or white. "Do not expect miracles. The traditional method relies on the application of carbamide peroxide, in the form of gel slid into a groove in soft plastic suitable for teething (she is paid - at night or few hours during the day - during a period of time determined by the dentist). And what about these products now available everywhere? "Some have some effectiveness," concedes Hugh Gregory. "They contain the same active ingredient that we use, but in lower concentrations." Regarding the kits, "it noted that the gutters are not tailored to the individual teeth, such as those we offer. As for powder, "they are much too abrasive. They use the enamel and dentin to pierce, even more yellow than the tooth. The person will still brush and brush, which leads to disaster. Scaling regular dentist, with recourse to a special abrasive paste, allows intervention in conditions far more reassuring.
